CHAPTER 43

Husto went back to his office, sat down, and leaned back, swiveling the chair to idly look out the window, lost in thought.

He wanted to get as much juice out of the discovery to benefit his own investigation before flagging ND. After all, the quantity of drugs that could be hidden in two or three saddles was negligible compared to the sheer volume distributed by big-time drug dealers.

Maybe Narcotics won’t even be interested in the news. They have much bigger fish to fry.

He considered the options.

One: The drugs could have been placed inside the saddle during the manufacturing process. Two: The drugs could have been put there by a middleman—a tack distributor or a wholesaler. Three: The drugs could have been hidden inside the saddle by the retailer after receiving the goods. Four: The thieves had put the coke inside. Or five: A consumer had purchased the saddle and then used it to transport drugs, making the resale of the tack of secondary importance to the value of the illicit merchandise hidden inside.

Each of the scenarios presupposed different sets of agents handling the drugs. Under options one and two, the retailer could very well have been ignorant of the fact that some of their inventory carried drugs inside. Or they could have been an accomplice. Under option three, the retailer was solely responsible for the drugs. Under options four and five, thieves or the end-consumer/purchaser was the culprit.

How does this new info connect to the Tejas Blast and to the kidnappers?

He didn’t know. It was still a loose end.

All the lab tests proved was that one saddle had been used for drug transport. It was unknown who put the coke inside.

Husto scratched his forehead.

The maximum amount of coke that could have been packed inside the saddle was slightly less than half a cup. A street value of maybe twenty thousand dollars. If all three of the stolen saddles had been similarly packed, it was worth sixty thousand, tops.

That was not enough money to make anyone’s fortune. Certainly not enough to risk the vengeance of the cartels and street gangs. The value of the three prize horses along with their tack was close to one hundred fifty thousand.

Apparently, though, whatever was going on had caught the attention of El Jefe. And they’d given Blast the orders…to shut it down.

Maybe they were the ones who’d had Nabeel Ajaj killed.
